ILSAC GF-6 Motor Oils Hits the Market Soon... CITGO SuperGard Will Be Ready

In keeping up with the latest industry advancements, CITGO Lubricants is currently developing products to meet the ILSAC GF-6 Motor Oils Standard, set to hit the market by May 2020. There’s been a lot of advancements in automotive technology. These changes have created a need for improvements in motor oil formulations. That is what ILSAC GF-6 is all about.

ILSAC GF-6 is the latest engine oil performance standard, developed by the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) to address the need for improved fuel economy and enhanced engine capabilities for passenger cars. Complementing the ILSAC GF-6 is the API SP standard, developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API). API SP includes all ILSAC requirements while also providing performance requirements for oils outside ILSAC-member recommendations. Now, what does this mean for you and your vehicle?

The Goals of the New ILSAC GF-6 Standard
The new ILSAC GF-6 standard is designed to improve the performance of your engine by:

  • Providing advanced wear protection for your engine
  • Providing superior engine cleanliness
  • Improving fuel economy
  • Preventing operational issues such as low-speed, pre-ignition and timing chain stretch

What is the ILSAC?
The ILSAC was formed in 1992 by American and Japanese automakers. They set minimum performance standards for passenger car motor oils (PCMO) used in gasoline-fueled engines, using the American Petroleum Institute’s (API) Engine Oil Licenses and Certification System.

When will the ILSAC GF-6 Standard go into Effect?
The first available use date is May 1, 2020.

How Can I Identify a ILSAC GF-6 and API SP Standard Oil?
To identify an ILSAC GF-6 and API SP standard motor oil, look out for one of the symbol above.

According to API, “Licensed oils that meet the ILSAC GF-6A standard will be allowed to display the API Certification Mark “Starburst” and may be used where oils meeting GF-5 or earlier gasoline engine oil standards had been recommended. Oils that meet ILSAC GF-6B will be allowed to display a new mark, the API Certification Mark “Shield,” and may be used where SAE 0W-16 oils meeting API SN had been recommended.  API is introducing this new “Shield” at the request of automakers to prevent confusion and ensure that 0W-16 oils are used only in applications where they are recommended.”

ILSAC GF-6 oils will come in two categories: GF-6A and GF-6B.

The basic differences between both categories are the viscosity grades, backward compatibility and fuel efficiency.

  • While oils meeting the ILSAC GF-6B standard will have a lower viscosity grade of SAE 0W-16, GF-6A standard oils will come in a range of 10W-30, 5W-30, 5W-20, and 0W-20.
  • ILSAC GF-6A oils will be backward compatible, whereas, ILSAC GF-6B will not be in older engines. Always consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for application.
  • Both categories are formulated to improve fuel efficiency, however, lower viscosity oils have been shown to offer greater fuel efficiency. Therefore, the 0W-16 viscosity grade covered by ILSAC GF-6B is expected to provide greater fuel efficiency.

Other than differences in fuel economy, both categories are expected to meet the same stringent performance specifications. The essence of the logo differentiation is to prevent misapplication. Always follow your OEM recommendation for application.

Does CITGO have GF-6 Approved Products?
On May 1, 2020, there will be CITGO products displaying the GF-6 and API symbols ready for purchase.

CITGARD 700 and Ragan Unveil Partnership to Pay Tribute to Dale Jarrett’s First Cup Series Win at Darlington

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (August 23, 2018) – David Ragan and CITGARD® 700 will turn back the clock to NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Jarrett’s first Cup series win for the upcoming “Throwback Weekend” at Darlington Raceway.

Jarrett drove the red and white car, sponsored by CITGO® Petroleum Corporation, for Wood Brothers Racing during the 1990 and 1991 seasons. The 1991 win came after a multi–lap, door–banging battle with Allison that ended in a photo finish and sent Jarrett to Victory Lane for the first time. Ragan, who was six years old at the time, remembers the race and the paint scheme.

“Dale Jarrett was a hero of mine growing up,” Ragan recalled. “I have an old photo of me as a little kid holding a hero card of Dale and the CITGO car, and I remember watching that race with my dad and seeing him win. We were both fans of Dale and the Wood Brothers especially, so this is a great opportunity to honor Dale and his Hall of Fame career.”

The historical, storytelling theme of the Darlington weekend was the perfect time for CITGO to make a return to the sport, this time with the CITGARD brand.

“This is really an exciting partnership for CITGARD 700 to join with David Ragan and Front Row Motorsports for this throwback weekend at Darlington,” said Ratliff, national sales manager of CITGO lubricants. “We’re really proud of the CITGARD brand and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this historic weekend to celebrate NASCAR and its legendary history.”

After that first victory, Jarrett went on to record 32 wins, including three Daytona 500s, and earned the Cup championship in 1999. He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2014. The North Carolina native is now a commentator for NBC Sports and will be in the television booth for the Darlington race when the CITGARD 700 Ford is on track.

“That was really the moment, the day, the race that really set my career off,” recalled Jarrett. “It showed a lot of people that thought, but weren’t sure, that I could do it. The opportunity to get the win with CITGO and the Wood Brothers was great.

“I look forward to reliving that moment at Darlington,” Jarrett continued. “To be able to be on the air and tell others about that day that maybe aren’t familiar with how much it means it to me, I look forward to that.”

Overseeing the partnership is Fritz Sports & Event Enterprises.

“We are honored to be part of bringing a major new brand into the sport of NASCAR and facilitating the return of an iconic company with a long and rich history in motorsports," said CEO Doug Fritz. "We want to say a special thank you to Dale Jarrett and (emcee) Winston Kelley for being part of today’s announcement.”

The CITGARD 700 Ford will first hit the track at Darlington Raceway on Friday, Aug. 31, when the throwback weekend kicks off with Cup series practice sessions. The Bojangles’ Southern 500 airs Sunday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. ET on the NBC Sports Network.

Ins and Outs of Motor Oils

Motor oil – it’s the life blood of your vehicle, and like blood, there are different types. It might seem like a simple choice, but each one has unique effect on your car’s performance. Some oil increases fuel economy, some is cheaper, and some are suited for higher–mileage automobiles. So, which one is right for you?

First of all, there are a few things to take into consideration when shopping for oil, such as the conditions of your environment and even your own driving habits. So, to help you decide, we’ve compiled some comparisons between the most common types of motor oil.

But before you make your purchase, make sure to first consult your owner’s manual to ensure you’re using the recommended oil for your vehicle. Also, keep track of regular oil changes, as intervals vary based upon which type of oil you choose — synthetic oil, for example, will last a few thousand more miles than conventional oil will. By following these simple steps, you’ll keep your car healthy and notice fewer problems down the road.
